Detention Center Release Paths

The Burlington County Detention Center is the county’s adult jail, operated by the Burlington County Department of Corrections. An adult can leave the Grant Street facility through a court-ordered pretrial release, completion of a county sentence, or another legal disposition. The person may instead be moved to the New Jersey Department of Corrections after sentencing, taken on another county’s warrant, returned to federal custody, transferred to immigration custody, hospitalized, or moved under another lawful order. Only some of those paths end in the community.

A reliable Burlington County Detention Center release entry should identify the time county custody ended and the disposition or destination. “Transferred to DOC” means state custody began or continued. A detainer means another authority asserted a right to hold the person. Neither event is the same as unconditional release. A bond or pretrial release also does not mean the charge was dismissed. The court case can remain active after the jail door opens.

Confirm Detention Center Releases

Burlington County does not advertise an official public inmate search or recent-release archive. Start with the source closest to the event, then obtain a record if the exact time or legal basis matters. 1. Search the named person through New Jersey VINE. Read the agency, custody label, and status date. A transfer alert is not a community-release notice.
2. Call Burlington County Corrections. Ask whether the named person remains in county custody and which office accepts a release or movement-record request.
3. Use the Burlington County OPRA form when a documentary timestamp, disposition, or receiving agency is needed.
4. Check PROMIS/Gavel for the Burlington County criminal disposition. Match the case, not just the name.
5. Follow the recorded destination. Use NJDOC for a state transfer, BOP for federal custody, ICE for immigration custody, or the named county for an outside warrant.

These sources update for different reasons and on different schedules. VINE is a notification tool. Corrections maintains the custody record. The court docket records legal action, but it is not a live door log. Use two matching sources when a same-name error or transfer is possible.

Detention Center Release Contacts

The official Burlington County directory separates the Detention Center, Department of Corrections, and Sheriff. That distinction matters. Corrections operates the jail and is the proper first route for a county release or movement record. The Sheriff handles functions such as warrants, court security, and transport, but should not be described as the operator of a sheriff-run jail roster.

The listing is useful for a current routing call. A written OPRA response remains the stronger source for an exact release time, authority, or destination.

Detention Center Release Records

Ask for an existing record, not an explanation that staff must create. Identify the person by full committed name, known alias, approximate custody period, booking number, SBI number, arresting agency, or court number when available. A narrow request is easier to match and less likely to sweep in unrelated private or security-sensitive material.

Direct the county OPRA form to the county custodian and identify Corrections as the record holder. Ordinary paper charges listed on the form are five cents per letter-size page and seven cents per legal-size page. Electronic delivery can reduce paper and postage costs.

New Jersey OPRA generally calls for a grant or denial within seven business days unless another rule, extension, or circumstance applies. Records may be redacted for juvenile confidentiality, personal identifiers, medical privacy, victim information, security concerns, court orders, or other lawful grounds. Ask for the nonexempt part and a written legal basis for any denial.

Historic Prison Is Not Active

Search results can confuse the active Burlington County Detention Center with the historic Burlington County Prison at 128 High Street. The old prison operated from 1811 until 1965. It is now a museum. Its exhibits and archives may help with local history or genealogy, but museum staff are not the contact for a current detention, transfer, or release.

Detention Center Release System Fork

Burlington County has an unusual mix of custody systems. County Corrections operates the adult jail and minimum-security unit. NJDOC operates several state institutions in the county. FCI Fort Dix belongs to the federal Bureau of Prisons. ICE or another federal authority may receive someone from local custody. The correct search follows the custodian, not the map.

A county movement entry is the hinge between these systems. If it names a receiving agency, continue there. NJDOC’s Date Out-of-Custody concerns a state custody period, while a BOP RELEASED result concerns federal custody. Neither should be substituted for the Burlington County jail record.

Detention Center Release Evidence

The court case supplies the legal reason behind many Burlington County Detention Center releases. PROMIS/Gavel may show charges, case events, disposition, sentence, and judgment information for a Superior Court criminal matter. A municipal matter belongs in the New Jersey municipal court search instead. Neither system is a live custody tracker, but each can help distinguish pretrial release, dismissal, probation, time served, or a custodial sentence after the jail entry is no longer visible.

Transport also needs careful treatment. The Burlington County Sheriff Courts Bureau transports adult and juvenile defendants between detention facilities and courts. A court appearance or transport does not prove community release. The person may return to Grant Street, enter NJDOC, or remain subject to another custodian. Ask for the movement destination instead of drawing a conclusion from a courthouse sighting.

When records seem inconsistent, line them up by time. First identify the booking episode. Next read the release or movement timestamp and code. Then locate the matching order or judgment. Finally, check the receiving agency if one is named. A “time served” judgment can end the custodial part of one case, yet a second warrant or detainer may still prevent community release. A “bond” entry reflects release under court terms and does not resolve the charge.

Older county cases often require this record pair because Burlington County offers no published retention window for an online released roster. Internal records can exist even when nothing remains publicly visible. An expungement or sealing order may also restrict later access. A no-result finding must therefore remain narrow: the searched source did not return a record, not that the custody event never happened.

The county Clerk’s PRESS portal is another local source that can mislead a searcher. PRESS handles Clerk-recorded material; it is not Burlington County’s criminal disposition system. Use PROMIS/Gavel for a Superior Court criminal case and the municipal search for a municipal matter. The correct court source may explain why the Detention Center acted, while the Corrections record supplies the custody timestamp. Neither should be replaced by an unrelated wanted list, news item, or private arrest page. Keep copies of matching identifiers and dates when documenting the result and its source.
